For anybody wanting to play cards, have fun, and even make money, Poker has got to be the ultimate casino game.
In order to become a Poker player who wins, you’ll need a decent memory, the ability to make judgement calls and take risks, and something of a head for figures.
The Basics
When just starting out, many players are overwhelmed by the sheer varieties of the game. This is why it’s a good idea to start with something simple, and then move on to the more complex varieties.
A great game for beginners is Straight Draw Poker, which is the simplest form of the game.
To start out, you’ll need a pack of 52 playing cards, some playing money, and a few friends (between five and eight is great).
Each player starts out by putting a sum of money (amount to be agreed on by the players) into the center of the table. This amount is what we refer to as the “ante”.
Next, the following must be agreed to:
- The stakes.
- The amount of playing time.
The next step is to cut the cards, and have each person choose a card. The person who drew the highest card, is the dealer. After this, each player is given five cards, all dealt face-down.
How The Hands Are Ranked
- The Royal Flush. A royal flush is a sequence of five cards – all of the same suit – from Ace to Ten. This is the “holy grail”, and is an unbeatable hand in any Poker game.
- The Straight Flush. This is a sequence of five cards of the same suit.
- Four Of A Kind. Four cards of the same rank. This time around, the suits will differ.
- Full House. A full house comprises of three cards of the same rank and two more cards (also of the same rank).
- This is five cards of the same suit. For example: all diamonds.
- The straight is made up of five cards in sequence – of any suit.
- Three Of A Kind. Three cards of the same rank make up the three of a kind.
- Two Pairs. Just as the name suggests, this hand consists of two cards of the same rank, and to more cards of another rank.
- One Pair. This is two cards of the same rank.
- Ace High. Consists of an Ace card together with four odd cards.
